Highly Recommended! “British writer Terence Rattigan's rarely-seen 1939 drawing-room drama "After the Dance" is an effective period piece—a portrait of carefree upper-class "bright young things" of the 1920s as they ungracefully age while their world slips inexorably toward another world war. Runcible Theatre Company's intimate staging at the Royal George Theatre (apparently the script's Chicago premiere) features strong performances under Andrew Root's direction, with Layne Manzer especially compelling as a weak, shallow, privileged alcoholic torn between his loyalty to his wife and the new sense of purpose he finds in his romance with a younger woman.” – Albert Williams, Chicago Reader
Play
Part social comedy, part tragedy, After the Dance explores the crumbling facade of the Mayfair party circuit in 1930's London. With one war over, and another fast approaching, David and Joan Scott-Fowler are determined to exist in a state of idealistic inebriated bliss; but when the young Helen Banner pierces through the hedonism David and Joan are forced to confront the truths around them, with devastating consequences.
First staged in 1939, in a symbiotic irony the original production closed after only six performances due to the impending war. Since then the play has enjoyed many successful revivals, including a production at the Royal National Theatre, London in 2010.
Andrew Root directs the Chicago premiere.
Shows perform Nov 11 - Dec 18, Fri & Sat 8pm, Sun 3pm at The Royal George Theatre, 1641 N Halsted, Chicago, Il, 60614
